Where have I been!
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you all, but, thank goodness, the hotel has been busy!
In the interim, although the city always has something going on, let me concentrate on what is coming up in the next few weeks.
On November 22nd, the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival will once again light up Michigan Avenue. Located just a ½ block from the hotel, many of your favorite Disney characters will be attending the event with a parade featuring not only our friends from Disney, but floats, balloons and much more! Then the Magnificent Mile will be lit up until the end of February (more on that event in future blogs)
On Thanksgiving Day, watch the 75th annual McDonalds Thanksgiving Parade on State Street.
Beginning November 28th, Chriskindlemarket returns back to Daley Plaza. Featuring items and food from over 50 vendors, this is a highlight of the season.
After more than three years, Wicked! Will be leaving Chicago in January, so come on in to Chicago to see this wonderful musical before it leaves!
In addition to Wicked!, the other Broadway shows in Chicago are Jersey Boys and Dirty Dancing. But there is much more theatre to enjoy in Chicago besides from the big three. We have the Goodman, Lookingglass, Remy Bumpo, Steppenwolf and so many others. See Chicago theatre before it hits New York!
American Girl has moved! It is now at Water Tower Place in a wonderful new multi level store, awaiting every little girls dream, just a five minute walk from the Avenue hotel.
For the little guys, we still have the Lego store and ESPN Zone. Out in the suburbs, you must visit LegoLand, at the Streets of Woodfield so much for everyone to see and do for kids of all ages.
Feel like Hans Brinker? (Please tell me you know who that is) Both the Millennium Park Ice Rink and the Navy Pier Ice Rink will be open for your skating pleasure.
Of course Millennium Park is a great place to go no matter what your pleasure. Great events, sculptures, museums for one and all.
The Museum of Science and Industry will once again present its Christmas Tress from Around the World. This annual event is so much fun to see how celebrate the holiday.
Have you seen the new Spertus Museum of Jewish Culture? This brand new architecturally beautiful building is on South Michigan Avenue offers over 1,500 objects from its world class collection. The museum also had tours, dining (Wolfgang Puck) and the Spertus Shop, just in time for Chanukah.
Stop by to see the new SkyLounge? Offering wonderful views of the city and the lake (Lake Michigan) fantastic cocktails and wonderful tapas, it the new place to be in Chicago!
Chicago and the Avenue hotel Chicago are always offering new ideas, new events, always something new at the Avenue (new!) hotel Chicago
To keep fully up to date, email me with all your questions, comments or if you yourself have an event coming up!
Next time, I’ll write sooner, I promise, as I approve this message!

Weekend Fun!
Hello again!
It’s me, Verne your concierge.
This weekend we have the 50th anniversary of one of Chicago’s favorite events, as well as a brand new event, which hopes to become a Chicago staple, and one event that is as old as Chicago!
First off is the 50th Annual Chicago Air and Water Show. This event is billed as the oldest and largest free show of its kind in the country.
See Bill Murray jump put of a plane.
Hear Florence Henderson (or some of you may know her as Carol Brady) sing the national anthem.
Watch Gary Sinese and the Lt. Dan Band perform a lakefront concert, and of course real fireworks!
The actual event takes place on Saturday and Sunday (August 16 and 17) but on Friday you will see (and hear) all the planes practicing their maneuvers.
Do you miss the old country? On Friday August 15th from 10am to 11pm, go down to Princeton Avenue for the Croatian Fest.
Now in it’s 102nd year, (no, I was not at the first one) features a huge roast of 75 whole lambs and 10-15 pigs on the grounds of St. Jerome Croatian Catholic Church, in honor of the religious holiday Velika Gospa. A parade through the east end of Bridgeport kicks off the festivities.
From the oldest to the youngest. We welcome the First Annual Blues and Barbecue Fest on Saturday August 16th from noon to 6pm. This is at Sheffield’s, 3258 N. Sheffield. It’s a patio party including pulled pork, ribs and live music by The Sheffield Trio.
Next we have the Third Annual North Side Summerfest on Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday. This North Center neighborhood located at Lincoln and Belle Plaine features live music, arts and crafts and food.
We have another newbie! The Raven: Experience the Magic of Ravenswood.
This new two day fest in Chase Park offers live music on two stages, a marketplace, food beer and wine vendors and kid’s activities. Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday
Let’s go back to the Old World once more. Chicago Turkish World Festival on Saturday at Navy Pier features music, folk dancing, food and arts and crafts from Turkey, Macedonia, Bosnia and Albania
Also on Saturday is Barrio Art Fest 2008. This fifth annual community showcase of traditional and contemporary arts and culture features creative works from more than 50 artists of Puerto Rican and other Latino artists. Humboldt Park.
Chicago Carifete presents its 13th annual Caribbean arts and crafts festival on Saturday. This Hyde Park fest includes costumed dancers, musicians and more!
Two other events of note this weekend.
At the Chicago Cultural Center (77 E. Randolph) check out Life as a Legend: Marilyn Monroe. This free art show features works of the original blonde bombshell by Andy Warhol, Allen Joes, Peter Blake and more
At the Chicago Art Institute on Saturday beginning at 2pm, The “Naked at the Museum” Scavenger Hunt is going on. Go on a hunt for nudity in the paintings, sculptures and miniature period rooms of the museum. Clothing optional (ok that last part I added on my own)
Once again a busy weekend for all!
And where is the best place to stay and be centrally located for all these events? Why the Avenue hotel Chicago of course!
There is something to do all the time in Chicago, so check back often.
Later gorgeous!

It may be August, but this coming weekend, we have something for everyone in the way of festivals.
Let’s begin with the Caribbean Festival in Union Park. This Friday, Saturday and Sunday celebrate Jamaican independence with more than 35 Caribbean music and dance acts. The festival also includes traditional food and crafts.
How about Ginza Holiday: Japanese Cultural Festival. Located at the Midwest Buddhist Temple, it is a beautiful location in Old Town. Master craftsmen from Tokyo make and sell smoked pottery, bamboo products, wood carvings and embroidery. Vendors sell anime, jewelry, Asian goods, food and (my favorite) Kirin. (August 8-10)
The Granddaddy of Chicago Art Fairs, the Gold Coast Art Fair takes place this weekend as well. It has moved a bit over the years, now located almost in River North. The epicenter is LaSalle and Huron. Be sure and stop by the wine tent to see Ted Allen lead some cooking and wine demonstrations. This is a free event (unless you happen upon a Picasso you must have!)
Join Betty and Mary S. as they stomp grapes ala Lucy Ricardo at Taylor Street Festa Italiana! Featuring singer Deanna Martin on Saturday and the cast of “Jersey Boys” on Sunday are highlights of this neighborhood festival. Also sample food from over 12 area restaurants and browse arts and crafts. (August 8-10)
Saturday morning is the 79th Annual Bud Billiken Parade. The country’s largest African-American parade, named after a mythical guardian of small children, the parade lasts several hours (August 9)
The 13th annual Korean Street Festival on August 9th and 10th features a mix of traditional and contemporary Korean entertainment, such as dancing and drumming, martial arts demonstrations and Ssireum (anyone want to guess what that is?) Be sure and check out the food and crafts as well. The opening ceremony is at 4pm on Saturday.
Northalsted Market Days is Saturday and Sunday. This 27th annual Lakeview event is billed as the Midwest’s largest outdoor two-day festival, with more than 400 art, food and drink vendors and nearly 40 musical acts on four stages. The epicenter of this event is Halsted and Roscoe, with Roscoe’s “lifeguards” manning giant water pistols to keep cool.
Westfest 2008, a street fest along Chicago Avenue from Damen to Wood, features live music by local bands and DJs, arts and crafts and pet activities. (August 9-10)
So lots to see and do this weekend! If you live out in the suburbs (anything west of Halsted) come on down to see all the exciting offerings. If you can’t make it, no worries, more Festivals (and the Air and Water show) coming next week, but summer is counting down!
